Welcome to Sequoyah High School’s Cafe Chief a Latte!

What makes this coffee shop so unique is that it is operated by the students of Sequoyah High School. From 7:45-10:00 every day the special needs population serves up coffee, hot chocolate, cappuccino, tea and iced coffees to the faculty
and staff of Sequoyah. Everything is a dollar, except for the iced coffees - they
are three dollars. During class time, teachers can email in an order and the
students will deliver it to them.

How did all this come about? Several years ago, some of the teachers at Sequoyah visited a couple of coffee shops being run in other counties. We thought the idea was a wonderful way to get daily living skills, employment skills as well as social
skills to the students while providing a fun service to the school. We started out
with nothing…literally! Our principal loaned us some plumbing cost, the community chipped in on donations and with the complete support of our superintendent, Dr. Petruzielo, we were ready to run with it. And boy has it taken off!

The social skills that the special education students have learned are unfathomable. The social skills the regular education students have learned toward the special education students is priceless! That alone has bridged the gap beyond any other endeavor we could have imagined.

The daily living skills have been built upon a system of checks and balances. The working students are paid a “salary” that must be deposited into their bank account. With that money they must pay rent, insurance, and the electric bill- ON TIME! Life lessons are learned if the bills are not paid or late.

The coffee shop was a large but truly rewarding undertaking. The entire school have benefited both emotionally and socially and of course… in the tummy! As we say at the coffee shop, thanks a latte’ for your support!
